Kindergarten- Kandinsky (Music & Emotions Paintings)

Objectives:

· TLW the 4 artists we’ve seen in class so far

· TLW identify colors that correspond to various moods and emotions when listening to music

· TLW demonstrate how to create tints & shades

· TLW Create 2 finished paintings (inspired by the works of Kandinsky) that reflect the mood and emotion of pieces of music

· TLW practice various basic art room procedures

· TLW demonstrate each art room procedure

· TLW recall the 3 art room rules

K-1st:

· Slide Show: Review/ name all 3 artists/ review differences and similarities- introduce the work of Kandinsky- what kinds of things do the students see? What is the same and different to the work of the other 3 artists? Kandinsky using colors to represent various emotions- thinking about music as he was painting.

· Colors + Emotions: ask students what emotions or feelings come to mind when they think of various colors/ what kinds of things do they associate with various colors- go over examples

· Kandinsky and Music: various kinds of music can make you feel different things- play some examples (scan to the middle of many songs)- what kinds of colors could you use to show these emotions?

· In class project: creating 3 quick color compositions based on various pieces of music

· Review work of Kandinsky/ how he painted/ inspiration

· Review connection of colors+ emotions/ music+ emotions- play a few selections to quiz students

· Introduce Tints + Shades: DEMO- how to create them/ add darker color to light color (use only a tiny bit of black to add to colors)/ demo careful mixing of colors on paper- careful painted lines + colors (No watery paint!)

· Go over Scoring guide/ what they will need to show in this project

· Set up students for painting/ begin music- remind students to work slowly and carefully

Misc:

Kandinsky Mood Paintings”: Students will be creating 2 separate paintings- using paint only (no drawing first) The first day, students will listen to pieces of music that are more upbeat, as they begin to paint. The second day, students will listen to pieces of music that are slow, sad and dark. Students will be introduced to tints and shades in this project Quality of line and shape will be looked at carefully in these projects. Students must use at least 5 colors in their paintings. 2 must be secondary colors, and 2 must be tints or shades.
